Emerging icy cold from beneath the massive dam at Greers Ferry Lake, the Little Red River is a premier-class trout stream. Trout were introduced in 1966, three years after the dam was completed, and rainbows, browns, and cutthroats are caught for some 35 river miles below the dam.

Emerging icy cold from beneath the massive dam at Greers Ferry Lake, the Little Red River is a premier-class trout stream. Trout were introduced in 1966, three years after the dam was completed, and rainbows, browns, and cutthroats are caught for some 35 river miles below the dam.
The world-record brown trout — a 40-pound, 4-ounce monster — was caught here in 1992 by Howard "Rip" Collins of Heber Springs. That record stood for seventeen years. Brown trout in the 5- to 8-pound range are common, and 20- to 30-pounders are always possible.
The trout fishing stretch runs 29 river miles from Greers Ferry Dam to Pangburn. The brown spawning run from mid-October through November makes fall an especially good time to fish. Fly fishers do well with sowbugs, woolly buggers, and emergers; spin fishers with whole-kernel corn, night crawlers, and cheese.
The river is beautiful in its own quiet way — clear, cold water skirted by hardwood hillsides alive with otters, raccoons, deer, ducks, songbirds, and eagles. Nearby: the William Carl Garner / Corps of Engineers Visitor Center, the trout hatchery, and hiking trails overlooking the river.
